Kanji experience
Accompany without commanding.
Transform without invading.

More than a trip. A human experience.
The Kanji Experience is not a volunteering trip, nor is it a tourist adventure. It’s a journey of co-development where people from all backgrounds, with or without medical training, come together to share, learn, grow, and contribute to something real, alongside communities in The Gambia and Senegal.
We don’t go to “save” anyone. We go to connect. To build bridges. To walk beside local communities that have invited us to co-create health strategies, gather data, offer medical attention, and exchange cultural and professional knowledge, always from a place of humility and mutual respect.
Each edition lasts from July 15 to 30 or August 15 to 30, but we welcome flexibility: you can arrive or leave whenever it works best for you. Each group will include between 10 and 30 participants, and the trip is divided into three moments:
-
Collaborative work with Tanka Tanka, the only psychiatric hospital in Gambia.
-
Community-based health and research work in rural villages (one per edition).
-
Time for rest, cultural immersion and local tourism, always with respect and intention.
Throughout the journey, participants are encouraged to cross boundaries —inner and outer ones. We organize reflective assemblies at the end of each day, we share meals, spaces, and feelings with one another, and we rely on the wisdom and guidance of both local and Kanji professionals.
You’ll sleep in local homes, apartments, or guesthouses, depending on the stage of the trip. You’ll eat dishes cooked by community members in rural areas and enjoy local or international food in The Gambia. Water and meals are provided during all work phases.
During your free time, you’re free to rest or explore. We suggest local experiences like visiting fishing villages, beaches, markets, or national parks —but nothing is ever mandatory. We want your Kanji Experience to be real, honest and transformative.
This experience covers all food, accommodation, logistics, and our operational costs during the work phases. Flights and tourism expenses are not included, but our team is always available to assist you with planning and guidance.
This experience is not about romanticizing poverty or playing the savior. It’s about being present. About choosing to be vulnerable, to unlearn, and to build together.
It won’t leave you the same. That’s the only guarantee we can offer.
